Ministry of Health has hailed the public for supporting the National Cancer Centre’s fundraising dinner in Lilongwe.
The event, which is part of the Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, sought to raise K10 million for palliative care in the paediatric cancer programme, which supports children battling the illness in the country.
Deputy Minister of Health, Halima Alima Daud, who was the guest of honour, led with a K3 million purchase of two paintings to support the initiative. This was followed by a K36 million donation by Standard Bank and other valuable donations made by National Bank, NGOs and individuals – exceeding the fundraiser’s targeted amount.
Daud highlighted the country’s urgent need for proper cancer facilities and expressed excitement that the new cancer centre at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe and the patients are getting such support.
According to Executive Director for Baylor Foundation Malawi, Phoebe Nyasulu, approximately 70 to 80 new paediatric child cancer cases are registered each month.
