Farmers urged to adopt climate change resilient technologies

Farmers at Kasenga in Senior Chief Mwankhunikira in Rumphi District have been tasked to adopt new farming technologies that can withstand climate change shocks in order for them to have high yields.

Rumphi District Council Crops Officer, Victoria Shaba, made the remarks during a District Agriculture Field Day.

Shaba said it is important for farmers to adopt new farming technologies for them to achieve food security amidst the climate change crisis.

She also urged farmers to ensure they reserve enough food for their household use before selling part of the harvest.

One of the farmers who has adopted land and water conservation technologies, Dick Kumwenda, said his household is expecting to harvest enough food due to technologies such as swales that enhance retention of water in the soil.

Manager for Rumphi National Association of Smallholder Farmers in Malawi, Lettons Mkandawire, said he is happy that farmers were able to learn from others on various farming technologies through field visits.
