Chikwawa DC calls for concerted efforts towards development

Chikwawa District Commissioner Nardin Kamba has urged newly elected council chairperson for the district, Martin Goche and his vice, Alexander Shawa, to work together with the secretariat and all other councillors to develop Chikwawa and improve the welfare of the people in the district.

Kamba was speaking on Monday after Councillor Goche of Nyakamba Ward secured victory over Wyson Bush of Mwamphanzi Ward by a margin of nine votes to seven. Alexander Shawa was elected as vice chairperson with twelve votes, defeating Joe Gwanda, who got four votes.

In his inaugural speech, Chairperson Goche pledged his commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and district-wide development.

“I’m geared to work with everyone for the benefit of the people of Chikwawa. Together with the officers, I will ensure contractors are delivering high-quality infrastructure within the agreed period,” he said.

In his remarks, Member of Parliament for Chikwawa South Constituency, Ilyas Abdul Karim, echoed Kamba’s sentiments and emphasized the need to forge ahead and work together for the benefit of Chikwawa.

“Prior to this day, the candidates were campaigning, but the campaign period is now over. We need to put Chikwawa first,” he said.

Karim also assured collaborative support from all MPs to advance the district’s progress.

Before the elections, members of the council had a lengthy debate on whether to allow physical voting only or a hybrid voting system to afford a chance to voters who were absent. In the end, the house resolved to allow the conventional physical paper-based voting system only.
