BWB secures $145 million for operational improvements

Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has secured a $145 million grant (approximately K252 billion) from the World Bank to improve its overall operation.

Robert Hanjahanja, Chief Executive Officer for BWB disclosed this in Lilongwe when officials from the board met the Parliamentary Committee on Budget and Finance to discuss the company’s financial performance over the past five years.

Hanjahanja said this will improve water supply and sanitation services in Blantyre City and surrounding areas.

He noted that financial performance has declined over the past five years due to issues such as non-revenue water, high energy costs, and the lack of cost-reflective tariffs but believes the grant will ease such challenges.

Chairperson for Parliamentary Committee on Budget and Finance, Ishmael Mkhumba said the committee is impressed with the boards strategy and proposed projects to build a dam in Mulanje which he believes will help improve water services.
