Power outages are expected to decrease, starting on Monday, after the Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) carried out maintenance on machinery that was failing to operate due to wear and tear.
Acting CEO of EGENCO, Maxon Chitawo, made this disclosure when Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola visited Kapichira Hydro Electric Power (HEP) plant in Chikwawa District.
Chitawo stated that the Kapichira plant is currently producing 50% of its capacity but will soon rise to 97% by the end of Monday, following the completion of repairs on one of its two machines.
“People should have hope because we are doing our best to make everything go smoothly,” he assured.
Matola praised EGENCO staff for their dedication and thanked Malawians for their patience.
“Our friends have been working diligently, and we should appreciate their dedication,” Matola said.
The machinery that is being maintained at Kapichira HEP station has been working for the past 24 years.
The power plant generates 129.6 megawatts of the 441.55 megawatts produced by EGENCO nationwide.
