Bangwe stuns Songwe

Bangwe All Stars have registered their second win of this season’s NBS Bank National Division League after beating leaders Songwe Border United 2-1 at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre on Wednesday.

On the standings, Bangwe remain 11th out of 12 with 9 points from 15 games, with 3 draws and 10 defeats. Songwe remain top with 32 points from 15 games, with 10 wins, two draws and 3 defeats.

This is Bangwe’s first win since 17 July, 2026 after they managed to defeat Changalume Barracks 2-0. This was followed by a draw against Ndirande Stars a week later. After that, the team has lost 5 games in a row up to now.

Interestingly, the defeated side were favorites on paper before this game as they have been in form lately. They are coming from a 0-0 draw against Mzuzu City Hammers and a 3-0 win against Ntaja United.

It is also worth noting that this is the team with the highest string of wins than any other side.

In the game, the home team’s first goal came from an own goal by Isaac Mhango in the 8th minute, while the away side equalised in the 31st minute through Richard Cheyo.

The final nail to the coffin by Bangwe was scored by Upire Kapunja with an assist from Seleman Mussa.

Throughout the game, Bangwe dominated it, while Songwe had a hand-few chances.

At the end of the game, Innocent Milazi, Captain of Bangwe All Stars, was named the man of the match.

Coach for Bangwe, Isaac Jomo Osman, said the three points are very important and will motivate them to improve as they are lowly ranked in the league.

Osman: The team misses a lot of chances

He said the problem with the team is that it fails to convert chances, but he was quick to mention that the team will rectify the errors.

Elias Chirambo, Head Coach for Songwe United, said they squandered many opportunities, hence the defeat.

However, Chirambo said they are still focused on remaining on top of the table to earn a direct qualification to the Premiership.

Chirambo says Bangwe still eyes promotion

“It was a good game to us, we created a lot of chances but my boys failed to utilise them so we have lost the game,” he said.

League action returns on Friday as Mighty Tigers face Fomo in Blantyre, and on Saturday there shall be a Northern Region battle as Embangweni United will take on Mzuzu City Hammers at Mzuzu Stadium.

On the table, Extreme FC are second with 26 points, Mzuzu are below and just behind with a point, followed by Embangweni who have 23 points. On 5th there is Namitete Zitha with 22 points, FOMO are 6th 21 points.
