Crime increases in South West Region

The number of criminal cases in the South West Region has increased from 1,602 last year to 1,643 this year, Deputy Commissioner of Police for the region, Greadwick Mangadzi, has confirmed.

Mangadzi revealed this during a meeting where the South West Regional Executive Committee was reviewing its third-quarter performance.

He said there has been a 3 percent increase in criminal cases and an increase in road traffic accidents, with 77 accidents recorded representing a 22 percent rise, including those involving motorcycles.

Asif Gillani, who is the Regional Executive Chairperson, said most motorcycle accidents are happening in the country due to lack of expertise among the owners.

Gillani noting that most of them did not undergo formal road traffic training and do not have valid licences, but expressed optimism that the meeting will be beneficial.

The meeting was attended by police officers from various districts, chiefs, as well as officials from the Minibus Owners Association of Malawi and the Kabaza Association of Malawi.
