Likoma District Council will roll out an e-payment system for revenue collection starting 1 April, Council Revenue Accountant Christopher Munthali has confirmed.
According to Munthali, the move is aimed at improving efficiency and accountability, as the council transitions from manual methods that rely on physical tickets and record books.
He disclosed this during a meeting in Likoma, where officials from Mwanza District Council conducted training sessions for revenue collectors on the use of the e-payment system in the council chamber.
Munthali said the new system will help cut operational costs associated with printing and managing revenue collection materials.
He added that the council expects the digital platform to enhance overall revenue performance and streamline financial processes.
Munthali further explained that the manual system posed challenges in monitoring and controlling revenue collectors, creating loopholes that could affect accountability.
“With the e-payment system, the council anticipates improved tracking and transparency in revenue collection,” he said.
Vice Council Chairperson Ernest Travor Gulu welcomed the initiative, describing it as a progressive step towards modernising council operations.
He has since urged traders in the district to embrace the new system, emphasising its potential to improve service delivery and financial management.
