The 2nd Regional Workshop on Sustainable Forest Management has begun in Blantyre with a call for SADC countries to unite in avoiding, reducing, and reversing deforestation of land and ecosystems.
Speaking at the opening, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Dr. Yusuf Mkungula, said the workshop aligns with Malawi’s national and international development agenda.
He cited key areas such as the National Charcoal Strategy, the National Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy, the National Agricultural Investment Plan, the National Land Policy, and the National Forestry Policy.
“Malawi is privileged to participate in this impact program as it supports fulfilling national and global environmental obligations,”said Mkungula.
Malawi is among 11 countries in the Sustainable Forest Management Impact Programme on the Dryland Sustainable Landscapes (DSL-IP).
The meeting aims to share best practices and solutions to address deforestation.
The Sustainable Forest Management Impact Program of Dryland Sustainable Landscapes (DSL-IP) is a five-year program funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The program is led by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
