Government has underscored the need for more banking halls in the country’s districts to achieve the financial inclusion drive.
Secretary to Treasury, Betchani Tchereni, said this on Saturday during the opening of Centenary Bank branch in Chikwawa district.
“By bringing essential services closer to the people of Lower Shire, we are not only supporting local businesses and farmers but also advancing the goal of transforming Malawi into middle income country,” Tchereni said.
Centenary Bank’s Board Chairperson, Francis Pelekamoyo, said they have embarked on a strategy to reach out to rural areas which are mostly unbanked.
Chairperson of Katunga-Maseya Cane Growers Cooperative Society, Collins Mtalika, said the opening of the branch will ease the burden of traveling long distances to access banking services.
The bank has used K400 million to put up the facility.
