POLICE  INVESTIGATING RECENT SPATE OF  MURDERS IN LL

Malawi  Police Service says it is zeroing in on suspects involved in the recent spate of mysterious murders that have occurred in Lilongwe.

Lilongwe recently experienced two cases where the victims were murdered and left in their vehicles.

Speaking to MBC, Publicist for Malawi Police Service, Peter Kalaya,  said police have stepped up efforts to arrest the suspects who killed  Allan Witika, a Sales Manager at Coca-Cola  Beverages Company and Agness  Katengeza, an IT Manager at Reserve Bank of Malawi.

Kalaya said people in the country should be rest assured of enhanced security as detectives are already on the ground to apprehend the suspected criminals.

“We have started interviewing colleagues, friends and family that are connected to the deceased. We would like to assure  Malawians that we are doing everything possible to get the suspects apprehended,” said Kalaya.

A coalition of rights organisations has since called for a speedy investigation and enhanced security in the country saying it is vital in an attempt to attract investors. Michael Kaiyatsa,  Executive  Executive  Director  for the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation, one of the organisations in the coalition, said in a separate interview,

He said: “No investor would want to invest in a country where such   Is happening, we call for  quick action from the authorities to restore security in the capital.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Homeland Security, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma,  said national security is paramount and urged Malawians not to despair as the government through its security agencies is enhancing security in the country.

Zikhale Ng’oma further assured that soon government will involve international experts to deal with cyber security matters.

“The Ministry is working hand in hand with all stakeholders to make sure that the murderers are found and that they are given deserved punishment,” said Ng’oma.
