OPC to help safeguard innovator’s intellectual property

The Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) says it is committed to supporting and promoting rural innovators as they are crucial to finding solutions to challenges facing the country.

OPC Deputy Director responsible for performance of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs ), Joseph Chiwaula, made the remarks in Dowa District after appreciating an electricity supply innovation by 18 year old Ernest Andrew.

“ His innovation resonates well with enabler number 6 of the Malawi 2063, which talks about energy diversification,” said Chiwaula.

Ernest, from Chinguwo Village, uses local materials such as soldering wires and magnets to generate around 20 Watts of electricity, which is enough to power 15 houses in his village.

Andrew said he intends to increase his generation capacity to help those that cannot have access to the national grid and to urbanize villages.

Meanwhile, Director General of the Malawi National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) Gift Kadzamira said they are impressed with the innovation but called on other players like MERA and ESCOM to ensure the innovation follows safety standards.

Malawi is making strides in increasing electricity generation, which currently stands at 450 Megawatts.
