National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Public Trust Programmes Officer for Kasungu, Pilirani Chaguza, has advised farming households in the district to adopt new farming approaches to deal with climate change shocks.
Chaguza made the remarks on Tuesday during a mindset change and the Malawi 2063 sensitisation and awareness session at Kamphungu Primary School in the area of Tradition Authority Kawamba in the district.
He said farmers must stop their overreliance on organic fertilizers and rain-fed agriculture but should start making manure and adopt irrigation.
“We all see that climatic patterns are changing. That also calls for a mindset change in the way we approach our agriculture enterprises.
“We must adopt irrigation farming even if it means doing it on a small scale. The bottom line is we must start and get used to it because we can’t be attributing our food insecurity to poor rains when we have dams that have a lot of water,” Chaguza said.
Group Village Headman Serenji from the area said there is a need to popularise the Malawi 2063 vision, especially in rural communities so that people are aware of the direction the country has chosen to take.
