Museums serve as custodians of Malawi’s heritage – Govt

Department of Museums and Monuments says museums in the country play a vital role in offering educational resources and cultural preservation that are crucial for maintaining national identity.

This comes as on Saturday, 18th May 2024, Malawi joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Museum Day under the theme “Museums for Education and Research”.

Deputy Director of Museums and Monuments responsible for education and outreach services, Yohane Nyirenda said museums provide valuable insight into the country’s history as they house artefacts, documents and exhibits that help students and researchers understand Malawi’s past.

Nyirenda further said museums have contributed to the development of curricula for primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, ensuring that future generations can access and learn from these historical items.

In addition to using social media to raise awareness about museums, Nyirenda said the department has partnered with schools to integrate museum visits into their curricula.
