MRA hails One-Stop Border Posts as revenue game changer

Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has described One-Stop Border Posts (OSBPs) as crucial in accelerating revenue collection for the government.

MRA’s Marketing Communications Manager, Wilma Chalulu, expressed this view during a tour of the Dedza OSBP, where she briefed editors from various media houses on the station’s performance.

Chalulu noted that prior to the establishment of the Dedza OSBP, operations were often slow and inefficient, but the situation has improved significantly.

“This facility has transformed our ability to service cross-border traders and transit vehicles more swiftly and effectively. Previously, we would collect between K3 to K5 billion per month, but since moving here, we’ve seen a rise to K16 billion,” she said, adding that security and convenience have been instrumental in attracting increased traffic.

However, Chalulu was quick to point out that smuggling remains a key challenge to MRA’s revenue collection work.

The station has also made it easier to address issues of illegal exports. Chalulu highlighted the challenge of curbing the smuggling of raw products, saying, “We are continuously working with various stakeholders to combat these activities and ensure adherence to the law.”

Zimbabwean truck driver, Joseph Butao, echoed Chalulu’s sentiments.

“We are spending much less time at the border now. The processing of necessary documents is faster, enabling us to deliver goods on time without delays,” said Butao.

One of the clearing agents at the Dedza OSBP, Jackson Nkhoma, also commended the improvements, observing a surge in business.

“Our clients appreciate the streamlined process, which has increased their confidence in using this border,” he said.

The MRA asserts that OSBPs are designed to consolidate border control procedures, reducing inefficiencies and cutting down on border waiting times, benefiting both the government and cross-border businesses.
