MPs await Leader of Opposition’s evidence on vote rigging allegations

Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Aisha Mambo Adams, has reminded the Leader of the Opposition, George Chaponda, that the clock is ticking on the 48-hour ultimatum given to him to provide evidence supporting his allegations of vote rigging.

He had claimed in the House that the National Registration Bureau (NRB) is using a National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) warehouse in Kanengo, Lilongwe as a hub to manipulate voter registration ahead of next year’s elections.

Speaking in Parliament, Adams emphasised the importance of following parliamentary procedures when it comes to such serious allegations.

“As the procedure dictates, the evidence must be submitted to my office for proper evaluation before it is forwarded to the concerned parties,” she said.

Chaponda had initially proposed that Parliament visits the NFRA warehouse to examine the alleged evidence on site, arguing that it was impractical to physically bring the warehouse or its officials to the House.

However, the Second Deputy Speaker ruled that this was not in line with parliamentary norms, reiterating that the evidence must be submitted within the allocated timeframe.

“The rules of this House differ from those of the courts. While courts may visit crime scenes, here the evidence must be presented through the established process,” she said.
