Expectations are high that the second compact grant of $350 Million (approximately K612 billion) meant for transport and land administration sectors under the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) will have a positive impact on many Malawians.
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera made the remarks during a presidential plenary session as part of the 20th anniversary celebration
for MCC in Africa.
The compact is focusing on new road corridors targeting rural areas in Malawi to benefit smallholder farmers, who face a lot of challenges in accessing urban, region and export markets.
“Although my government is promoting a drive towards agriculture commercialisation and mechanisation,a large percentage of the population still practices subsistence farming,as the country depends on agriculture. The second compact will therefore enhace food security, promote livelihoods and foster sustainable agriculture development,” articulated the Malawi leader.
President Chakwera has since left Dallas,Texas ,USA for Kenya where he is expected to address the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health (AFSH) Summit on 9 May 2024 at the invitation of President William Samoei Ruto of Kenya.
