Malawi takes climate justice fight to ICJ

Malawi has asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to move in quickly to address climate change crisis adversely affecting Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

In his submissions to the court in Hague, Netherlands, Malawi’s Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda said Malawi has smallest gas emissions in the world standing at 0.01 percent though its heavily affected by the same.

Nyirenda explained in detail how it is frustrating Malawi’s development efforts.

“Between 2010 and 2022, Malawi experienced 16 major flooding events, five storm related disasters, and two severe droughts. Last year, Cyclone Freddy affected nearly 2.3 million people. Total damages are estimated at over half a billion United States Dollars. It is estimated that reconstruction will take around forty years, ” shared Chakaka Nyirenda.

Apart from demanding responsibility from rich countries to mitigate the effects of climate change, Malawi wants the court based in Hague to develop International laws on climate change.
