Malawi-Mozambique project operational by September

With work almost completed, the Malawi-Mozambique Power interconnector project is set to be operational by September this year.

This was revealed during a tour of the Phombeya Power Substation in Balaka by officials from the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), their counterparts from Mozambique and Zimbabwe, and a delegation from the Southern Africa Power Pool.

The substation is where Malawi will receive electricity from Matambo in Mozambique.

Work almost completed

System and Market Operations Manager for ESCOM, Mike Mkayenda, said when operational, Malawi will be tapping 50 megawatts of electricity from Mozambique.

According to Mkayenda, currently, all the 193 towers on the Malawi side have been erected, and what is remaining is putting up wires, a process which has already started.

Mkayenda further said the project is at 70% completion on both the Malawi and Mozambique sides.

The $127 million project, which started in 2022, is being funded by the Malawi Government, World Bank and the European Union, among other donors.
