Malawi, Mozambique agree to strengthen trade ties

Malawi and Mozambique have reaffirmed commitment to optimize use of the Nacala Corridor and Mozambique ports to further business exploits.

This has been disclosed by the new Mozambique High Commissioner to Malawi, Alexandre Herculano Manjate, after presenting his letters of credence to President Dr Lazarus Chakwera at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

Speaking to journalists after his interface with Dr Chakwera, Manjate said Mozambique is impressed with how President Chakwera and President Philipe Nyusi have rejuvenated the bilateral ties.

“With the President, we discussed energy and trade, but more importantly the need to ensure more businesses are using the corridors and Mozambique ports. It’s cheaper that way,” said Manjate.

Speaking on behalf of the Malawi leader, Presidential Press Secretary, Anthony Kasunda, said Malawi being a landlocked country, Mozambique remains its strategic partner.

“We rely on their ports for imports and exports of fertilisers and fuel…so it’s gratifying to see the ties strengthening,” said Kasunda.

In October last year, President Chakwera attended the inauguration of the rehabilitated Port of Nacala, which now handles 10 million tones of goods, some of which are for Malawi.
