Learners talk climate change through poetry

To promote environmental education, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) has awarded six primary students from Chikwawa and Nsanje districts for their contributions in a poetry and short story competition focused on climate change.

According to Lucy Mtilatila, the Director of DCCMS, the Weather Kids Competition was meant to engage students in creative expression while raising their awareness of environmental issues.

“It was exciting to see a lot of learners submit entries, it was overwhelming,” said Mtilatila. “Their poems and stories reflect good understanding of climate change and its effects on their communities. Unfortunately, we only had to select a few winners.”

The award winners received school bags, T-shirts, notebooks, and pens. They also toured DCCMS headquarters to appreciate some of the weather instruments used by the department.

Supported by UNICEF, the programme targeted six schools in Chikwawa and Nsanje but is expected to expand nationwide to involve learners from other schools across the country.
