Journalists drilled on gender and human rights reporting

Tereza Ndanga, Commissioner of the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) says it is high time organisations and institutions, including the media, started endorsing women to support and promote women into leadership positions.

Ndanga made the remarks during a training on human rights and gender-sensitive reporting in Lilongwe.

The training is designed to equip journalists with the skills to report on gender issues in a way that highlights human rights challenges faced by women and girls, while also acknowledging the important contributions of men in various fields.

In her opening remarks, Ndanga said capacity-building initiatives are vital in promoting equality that can help create a more equitable society.

According to Ndanga, a lack of knowledge of human rights among media personnel compromises the credibility of stories.

The day-one training has been organised by the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC)  with support from Iceland.
