Minister of Labour, Agnes Nyalonje, says the government is committed to ensuring that the labour sector is strengthened to improve productivity of the country’s workforce.
She was speaking when opening a two-day consultative workshop on the review of Malawi Labour Laws, being facilitated by the Zantchito Skills for Jobs program which is under the ministry.
The three laws under review are the Labour Relations Act 1996, the Employment Act 2000 and the List of Hazardous Work for Children number 12.
Nyalonje says the government is part and parcel to the labour laws review because leadership realises that a viable policy and legal framework on people management is crucial towards achieving the Malawi 2063 aspirations.
She emphasised that compliance with international labour standards is crucial for a productive workforce, urging employers to enhance legal reform with quality management.
The EU-funded Zantchito Skills for Jobs Program has already conducted similar consultative workshops in the Northern and Central regions.
