Government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing decent and secure accommodation to persons with albinism to improve their well-being and safety.
District Commissioner for Chiradzulu, Ellestina M’mame, said this when she inspected a house under construction for for 20-year-old Shira Matiki in the area of Senior Chief Ntchema.
The house is being built under Ministry of Land’s project dubbed ‘People with Albinism Housing Project’, which was launched in 2021.

The project aims to improve security and living conditions for persons with albinism, who are considered a vulnerable group.
In Chiradzulu this is the second house to be constructed under the project.
M’mame expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project, saying the house which costs over K111 million has durable materials and is constructed by reputable contractors, Mbalule Construction.
She expressed optimism that construction works will be completed in April having started in February this year.

Shira Matiki, who lives with her mother, hailed the kind gesture saying the 3-bedroomed house is not only her new lease of life, but would also provide security and decency as her current grass-thatched habitat is not secured and usually leaks during rainy season.
Secretary of Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi for Chiradzulu Chapter, Horace Chibwana, expressed gratitude to the government, urging it to increase the number of beneficiaries to cover the 150-plus membership.
