Government says it hopes to improve chiefs’ welfare through the construction of decent official chiefs’ houses
In an interview with MANA, Director of Chiefs Administration in the Ministry of Local Government, Charles Makanga, said this is an ongoing project that will be done in phases.
“Due to resource constraints, we cannot do for all chiefs at once but we have managed to start with 77,” Makanga said.
He added that there are plans to construct chiefs’ offices in the same compound where houses are being built, ensuring efficient and effective work by the chiefs.
“When a chief dies, the new one will come to occupy that house,” Makanga said.
Senior Chief Mkumbira of Nkhata Bay has since commended government for the gesture saying it is a clear indication that the government has the chief’s welfare at heart.
Acting Director of Public Works at Nkhata Bay District Council, George Gopani, said the council will intensify monitoring of the construction project at all levels to ensure quality and timely completion by contractors.
