Artists withdraw from 2024 Maso Awards over voting concerns

The 2024 Maso Awards have faced setbacks as several nominated artists have withdrawn from the event, citing distrust in the voting system and the awards’ authenticity.

Among those pulling out are rising female artist Emmie Deebo, comedian Mr. Jokes, gospel music icon Dr. Ethel Kamwendo Banda, and hip-hop artist Gwamba.

“I feel my style of comedy doesn’t fully align with the other nominees in this category,” wrote Mr. Jokes on his Facebook page.

Dr Ethel Kamwendo Banda said currently her focus is not on awards but on her projects she plans to release next year.

In response, Maso Awards’ Public Relations Officer, Sivy Simon, said what the artists have done is unprofessional.

“Public withdrawals after the list is released are considered unsportsman-like as they compromise the resources, manpower and public trust invested in each nominee. Our process prohibits withdrawals after nominees are publicly announced, as each nomination is the result of dedicated public support,” Simon said.

This year’s ceremony will be take place on December 28, 2024, at COMESA Hall in Blantyre.

Maso Awards were established in 2019 with the aim of promoting creative industry in the country.
