Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, says the government has put in place programmes to assist farmers impacted by El Niño weather conditions in the country.
Kawale disclosed this at Mkanda in the area of Traditional Authority Kawere, Mchinji, where Bayer Malawi, in partnership with Total Land Care, donated 20 metric tonnes of maize seed to smallholder farmers affected by the adverse weather condition.
Kawale revealed that approximately K900 billion has been allocated to help farmers purchase farm inputs and secure irrigation loans to ensure the country’s food sufficiency.
John Kanyingi, Commercial Lead for Bayer in Southern Africa countries, stated that the company aims to support its customers with high-quality seed to boost their production.
Total Land Care Executive Director, Blessings Mwale, emphasised that the donation will help mitigate food shortage in the affected districts.
Over 9,000 farmers are expected to benefit from the donation in seven districts of Kasungu, Mzimba, Ntchisi, Dowa, Nkhotakota, Dedza, and Mchinji.
