Madam Monica Chakwera says she will render more support to women facing infertility challenges.
In her capacity as Ambassador of More than a Mother by the Merck Foundation, the First Lady of Malawi said she is sharing important information with women groups across the country towards breaking myths and misconceptions surrounding the health condition.
“As a proud ambassador of Merck Foundation, More than a Mother Initiative, I remain steadfast in my commitment to empowering infertile and childless women by promoting access to information and education,” she committed.
Madam Chakwera made the remarks in her key note address at the 11th edition of Merck Foundation Africa Asia Luminary, which is underway in Tanzania.
Founder and Chairperson for the Foundation, Professor Frank Strangenberg-Haverkamp pledged continued support to the first ladies.
“Our aim is to improve the overall health and well being of people by building health care capacity across Africa,” Strangenberg-Haverkamp said.
During the two-day conference, which has has attracted close to 15 first ladies, they are discussing development issues including health and education on the continent.
World Health Organization findings show that more than 30% of women in Sub-Saharan Africa region aged between 25 and 49 years suffer from secondary infertility, inability to achieve a subsequent pregnancy.
