Maize prices drop in September

Maize prices dropped to K790 per kilogramme last month from K796 per kilogramme in August this year, signaling the impact of the opening of Admarc depots to sell maize.

This is according to a Market Intelligence Report for the month of September by the Reserve Bank of Malawi which quotes figures from International Food Policy Research Institute.

If the trend continues, inflation rate may start taking the downward trajectory since maize price holds the largest share in Malawi’s inflation basket.

Two months ago, President Dr Lazarus Chakwera commanded Admarc to open markets to make the grain readily available and reduce prices.
