A local company, Energising Development (EnDev) Malawi has launched a 4 million Euros ( approximately K7.3 billion) project, with the hope of promoting sustainable growth and inclusivity through renewable energy.
The initiative’s launch marks the official rollout of Results-based Financing (RBF), which will be managed by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF).
Rune Skinnebach, European Union’s Ambassador to Malawi, says the initiative will help promote climate-friendly productive use of energy technologies and services.
Ute König, German Ambassador to Malaw, stresses that improved access to clean and sustainable energy solutions can be a catalyst for many other positive impacts such as food security, health and economic development.
“I’m particularly happy to see that strong efforts are being made to ensure that the programme leaves no one behind, considering and including especially women, youth and people with disabilities,” König said.
UNCDF Energy lead Vincent Wierda says they look forward to collaborating with energy service providers (and empowering them) to diversify their offerings to embrace Productive Use of Energy.
This initiative aligns itself with Malawi’s Energy Policy, the Doha Programme of Action for Least Developed Countries and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which all place a strong emphasis on developing emerging markets in the energy sector.
