DODMA, UNDP push for disaster resilience

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are strengthening efforts to boost disaster resilience in Malawi through the implementation of the Disaster Management Act of 2023.

Speaking at the opening of a four-day conference in Blantyre on Interdisciplinary Learning Experience on Integrating Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Adaptation, Charles Kalemba, Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, highlighted the importance of the 2023 Act.

Kalemba emphasised that the Disaster Management Act of 2023 which focuses on building resilience and reducing vulnerability to disasters is crucial in minimising losses during disasters.

UNDP’s Deputy Resident Representative for Malawi Challa Getachew, urged organisations and companies to integrate resilience planning and disaster management into their operations and budgets.

The National Planning Commission, one of the stakeholders at the event, stressed the importance of sharing knowledge, best practices, and experiences on disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation to improve future planning.
