Commentators describe DPP as a weak Opposition

By Alufisha Fischer

Political commentators in the country have described the main opposition party in Parliament — the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), as a weak opposition block the country has ever had.

Good governance expert, George Chaima, has told MBC Digital that from 2019 to 2025, DPP members of Parliament contributed below people’s expectation as the party has been locked in never-ending political squabbles.

Chaima added that DPP has missed an opportunity to prove itself as a united block in Parliament by bringing constructive contribution to proposed government bills and policies.

Augustine Harawa concurred, adding that for the past five years, Peter Mutharika as a DPP leader has been very indecisive in resolving internal party wrangles, citing his failure to resolve issues surrounding the choice of leader of opposition, which had negative impact on the party’s ability to make meaningful contributions in Parliament.

Another Mzuzu based political commentator, Yolamu Nyirenda said the frequent absenteeism and boycotting of parliamentary sessions by DPP MPs has also contributed to the party’s inability to show that they are a government in waiting.

He added that the country will not be surprised to see most DPP MPs fail to get re-elected during this year’s general election as majority of them have performed below par in Parliament.

This come as Parliament last week concluded its last sitting for the 2019 to 2025 cohort of MPs before the September 16 General Election.
