President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has called for unity among Malawians, emphasising that national cohesion is essential for the country’s continued development, aligning with Malawi 2063.
Dr Chakwera made the remarks at Mzuzu Stadium during this year’s Kamuzu Day commemorations, where he led Malawians in honouring the life and legacy of Malawi’s founding President, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
The President described Dr Banda as a visionary leader who championed peace and unity, recognising that national harmony is fundamental to achieving economic transformation.
President Chakwera hailed Dr Banda’s lasting contributions to Malawi’s development, particularly in health, education, infrastructure, and socio-economic transformation, achievements that continue to shape the country.
Also speaking at the event, Minister of Local Government, who is also the Secretary General for Malawi Congress Party, Richard Chimwendo Banda, said Dr Chakwera is a true reflection of Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda in implementing long-lasting developmental projects that will stand the test of time, a similar vision that the founding President had.
He cautioned against political parties that seek to divide the nation through violence, urging citizens to remain vigilant and choose leaders wisely in the forthcoming elections.
In his sermon, Bishop Yohane Nyirenda of the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu, encouraged leaders to embrace humility and servant leadership for the benefit of all Malawians.
This year’s Kamuzu Day has been commemorated under the theme: “Kamuzu The Benchmark of Servant Leadership, Uniting Malawians and Prospering Together.”
