President Dr Lazarus Chakwera says Malawi is committed to working closely with the Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU) to enhance the welfare of farmers in the country.
Dr Chakwera made the announcement in Lilongwe during the launch of the two-day SACAU Annual Conference.
He emphasised the country’s dedication to promoting sustainable development practices that address disaster risks.
“Farmers are the heart of increased agricultural productivity and resilience, which is crucial for the country’s prosperity. Value addition is critical to ensure farmers are rewarded for their efforts,” Dr Chakwera said.
The President highlighted that the Malawi Government will continue to build capacity for farmers through improved extension services and the Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP). He added that the country is already making strides in fulfilling the Malabo Declaration with a 10 percent increase in the agricultural budget.
Dr Chakwera urged African countries to unite for economic recovery and the enhancement of disaster preparedness, response, and risk mitigation.
