Government says it will soon disburse 20 percent mobilisation fees under the reformed Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to enable the implementation of various projects across the country.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Reverend Moses Chimphepo, was speaking in Salima at the opening of a two-day symposium for Council Chairpersons and District Commissioners, alongside the sixth MAGNET Annual Conference.
Chimphepo said implementation of the CDF is progressing well, adding that over the past three months, councils have accessed preparatory funds under the five percent administration cost of the CDF.
He said, in addition, the Malawi Enterprise Development Fund (MEDF) has disbursed loans to women and young people, as well as bursaries for school fees, all under the CDF.
He, however, stressed the need for all councils to be vigilant in submitting the necessary documentation to the ministry to facilitate the timely transfer of CDF funds.
Speaking during the symposium, Chairperson of the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA), Isaac Jomo Osman, noted that the reformed CDF is vital for current Council Chairpersons to implement their development goals, as their terms of office will soon come to an end.
Osman also urged Council Chairpersons to believe in themselves and demonstrate confidence when carrying out their duties.
He said this would enable them to remain vigilant in spearheading development in their respective areas.
