United Nations (UN) has hailed Malawi’s commitment to promoting safe, orderly and regular migration.
It has also reaffirmed its readiness to provide continued technical and financial support to Malawi.
UN Resident Coordinator Rebecca Adda-Dontoh made the remarks today during a meeting with the Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.
Adda-Dontoh said the meeting focused on migration governance, border management, trafficking in persons, smuggling of migrants and refugee protection.
According to her, these are where the Malawi government is performing well and deserves UN commendation, as well as community resilience.
She further pledged support towards strengthening the implementation of the Trafficking in Persons Act.
This is through enhanced capacity building, development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), victim protection programmes, and the operationalisation of the National Referral Mechanism (NRM).
Mukhito hailed the partnership and support provided by the United Nations over the years.
The Minister noted that the collaboration has greatly contributed to strengthening Malawi’s institutional frameworks and coordination mechanisms in addressing migration and security-related challenges.
He stressed that the Malawi Government values the United Nations as a strategic and dependable partner in promoting national security, protecting vulnerable populations and advancing sustainable development.
The two parties have since agreed to continue working together to address emerging challenges, while promoting peace, security, human dignity and sustainable development for the benefit of all Malawians.
