Peace and Unity Commission calls for tolerance

Peace and Unity Commission has called on political players to ensure that their actions foster tolerance and peace among Malawians as next year’s elections approach.

Chairperson for the Commission, Mary Nkosi, said this on Friday during a peace stakeholders interaction in Kasungu District.

Nkosi said conflicts have no place in a democracy and that political activities must be issue-based.

“We must promote efforts that bring peace amongst communities because for us to move forward as a country, we need peace at all levels,” she remarked.

Chairperson for Kasungu District Council, Mwambilaso Mbedza, said conflicts do not only lead to human rights violations, but also derail efforts to develop the country.

The Commission is sensitising stakeholders on the reconstitution of District Peace and Unity Committees, with the financial support from United Nations Development Programme.

The meeting has brought together chiefs, members of the faith community, civil society organisations, police, persons with disabilities, among others.
