Government, FAWEMA launch K400 million Ntchisi Reading Initiative

Government has commended the coordinated efforts between government, civil society organisations, and development partners in promoting education in the country.

Quality Assurance Officer in the Ministry of Education, Chipiliro Kumwenda, said this during the launch of the Let’s Read Ntchisi Community Project, which is being implemented by the Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi (FAWEMA) and aims to promote a reading culture among learners in Standards 3 and 4 in Kayoyo Zone in Ntchisi District.

She said the government is ensuring access to education through free primary and secondary education, and that the project complements these efforts by ensuring that all primary school learners are able to read.

Kumwenda added that communities also have a big role to play in promoting children’s education, as children spend more time with them. She emphasised the need for all stakeholders to take part in advancing education.

FAWEMA Executive Director Wesley Chabwera said the project follows research that showed that many primary school learners in foundation classes struggle with reading. The project therefore seeks to improve their learning abilities.

Chabwera added that FAWEMA, together with the Ministry of Education, is implementing several strategies through the project, including procuring teaching and learning materials, recruiting additional teachers, renovating classrooms for Standards 3 and 4, and working with communities to support a learning culture.

The two-year project is expected to cost about K400 million and is targeting 12 primary schools in the district.
