Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has called for cooling breaks, adequate drinking water and medical preparedness during football matches following a heatwave currently being experienced in the country.
Earlier, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (MET) warned of a heatwave in some parts of Malawi, particularly the Southern Region, from October 18 to 23, 2026, with average temperatures forecast to reach 42 degrees Celsius.
“This is expected to be caused by a persistent warm easterly air mass over the country,” reads part of the MET statement.
In a statement issued on Friday, FAM advised match officials to ensure cooling breaks are provided in both halves, preferably around the 25th and 70th minutes, depending on prevailing weather conditions.
“Clubs must provide sufficient drinking water for players and technical officials before, during and after matches to maintain proper hydration. Match organisers must ensure that medical personnel and first aid facilities are readily available to respond promptly to heat-related emergencies,” reads part of the FAM statement.
The advisory comes as football resumes this afternoon, with Ekhaya FC facing Blue Eagles at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre in the top flight.
In the SRFA FINCA Division One, FC Thondwe will face Ekhaya Reserve, while Chizumulu United will take on Vision S Academy in the Chiwemi Investment NRFA League.
