Coca-Cola System contributes $3.6 BN to COMESA

‎Global consultancy firm, Steward Redqueen, has found that the Coca-Cola system contributed US$3.6 billion to economic activity across the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) region in 2024, while supporting more than 458,200 direct and indirect jobs.

‎The study, which assessed Coca-Cola’s economic footprint across COMESA’s 21 member states, attributes the contribution to the company’s operations and its network of bottlers, suppliers, distributors and retailers.

‎The findings, released on the sidelines of the 19th COMESA Business Forum in Harare, Zimbabwe, on October 20, 2026, show that the contribution represented 0.3 percent of the region’s combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

‎The report further reveals that for every direct job created by the Coca-Cola system, an additional 28 jobs are supported across the wider economy, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, retail, transport and services.

‎The study also found that Coca-Cola spent nearly US$1.5 billion on goods and services sourced from suppliers within COMESA member states in 2024.

‎The spending supported businesses in sugar production, packaging, manufacturing and logistics, strengthening economic links between the beverage industry and local enterprises.

‎Coca-Cola Africa Operating Unit President, Luis Felipe Avellar, said the findings demonstrate the economic opportunities created through local partnerships, investment and supply chains.

‎The company’s Vice President for East and Central Africa Operations, Alfred Olajide, added that its economic contribution extends beyond beverage production to include suppliers, retailers and distributors.

‎The report also highlights Coca-Cola’s Africa Water Stewardship Initiative, a programme valued at nearly US$25 million aimed at addressing water-related challenges across 20 African countries by 2030.

‎According to the study, a Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) model was used to assess the company’s economic contribution through its operations, local procurement and wider supply-chain relationships.

‎The findings were presented at the 19th COMESA Business Forum, which brings together regional leaders and business stakeholders to explore opportunities in trade, innovation and economic growth.

‎Coca-Cola says collaboration with COMESA remains important in strengthening regional economies and promoting inclusive and sustainable development.
