EU unlocks K174 billion for Malawi

The European Union has committed €85 million approximately K174 billion to enhance Malawi’s electricity infrastructure and an additional €8 million to support the country’s civil society organisations.

The €85 million will be used to upgrade Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) power lines from wood to steel poles and improve substations, potentially connecting Malawi to neighboring countries. The fund comprises a €55 million concessional loan and a €30 million grant.

ESCOM’s  Chief Executive Officer,  Kamkwamba Kumwenda,  said the new power line will address transmission shortfalls and reduce power outages in the northern region.
