Chakwera to launch National Housing Symposium

All is set for the launch of the National Housing Symposium in Lilongwe.

The function will be presided over by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera at the Bingu International Convention Centre.

The Housing Symposium is an initiative by the Ministry of Lands in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity aimed at addressing pressing issues of sustainable and affordable housing in the country.

Among others, the symposium will focus on fostering community driven housing solutions that promote inclusivity and resilience, promoting innovation in housing solutions that are affordable and sustainable, advocating for low cost housing models and identifying financing solutions for housing projects.

The symposium comes at a time when a report by Habitat for Humanity say over half of 4.8 million housing units in Malawi are substandard, mostly made of mud and grass thatched, and to meet the current housing demand, at least 21 thousand new housing units will have to be constructed annually for the next 10 years.
