Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring free, fair and credible general elections scheduled for September 2025.
MEC Chairperson, Justice Anabel Mtalimanja, said this in Neno on Monday during a briefing to the District Elections Supervisory Team (DEST), Multi-Party Liaison Committee and media on the pilot voter registration.
Secretary-General for Umodzi Party in Neno, Matias Kayele, expressed gratitude to MEC for the briefing and requested continuous engagement on important developments.
In Neno and Nsanje districts, the exercise is scheduled for September 18-19 this year.
In the pilot voter registration, MEC has adopted Election Management Devices (EMDs) which are more efficient and technologically advanced.
The commission moved away from biometric voter registration kits, which have become obsolete since their acquisition in 2017 by the National Registration Bureau (NRB).
Speaking in Nsanje, MEC Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said the exercise is very critical in preparation for the 2025 elections.
Dedza District, concluded its phase over the weekend and MEC Director of Electoral Services, Hastings Bota, said lessons have been drawn in implementing pilot registration.
MEC is conducting pilot voter registration in other districts like Balaka, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Chitipa.
