United Civil Servants SACCO (UCSSACCO) has stepped up its contribution to environmental conservation by planting over 1,000 trees at Kaphala Full Primary School in Lilongwe, as part of a broader initiative aimed at planting two million trees by 2028.
The initiative combines financial inclusion with environmental sustainability, with the SACCO emphasising that its role goes beyond providing financial services to supporting communities affected by climate change.
UCSSACCO General Manager, Francis Waliwa, said the organisation is focused not only on planting trees, but ensuring their survival and long-term impact.
“We are talking about growing trees, not just planting trees. Our target is to ensure that these trees survive and contribute to restoring forests in the country,” said Waliwa.
The exercise has also attracted continental backing from the African Cooperative Development Foundation (ACDF), noting the role of cooperatives in addressing both economic and environmental challenges.
ACDF Executive Director, Grace Watsiera, said SACCOs have a critical role to play in driving sustainable development across Africa.

“Planting trees may seem simple, but it is critical in building a sustainable Africa, addressing climate change, and supporting livelihoods across communities,” said Watsiera.
Local leaders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely for the area, which has had limited environmental interventions.
Councillor for Sanjiko Mazengera Ward, Paul Khongoni, said structures are already in place to ensure the trees are protected and maintained.
“We will work with existing government structures and community groups to ensure these trees are taken care of and the initiative is sustained,” said Khongoni.
The programme is also expected to raise awareness among communities and school children on the importance of environmental conservation.
