National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) has halted construction works at Jacaranda Shopping Centre along the Masauko Chipembere Highway in Blantyre due to failure to meet required construction standards.
NCIC issued a Stop Order on 4 April 2024 to the contractor who, however, chose to disregard the stop order.
NCIC acting Regulatory and Enforcement Director, Dorothy Nyong’onya, disclosed that the owner of CP Properties Limited had hired Asil Interiors, a contractor, whose license category is at a limit of K50 million.
“Apart from flouting category level, we find that the contractor has also not been providing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) materials to his workers, which is a breach of health and safety stipulations,” Nyong’onya said.
Police have since taken in the contractor for questioning.
