Over 45 irrigation farmers from Zomba are on a learning visit in Nkhotakota where they are expected to learn about scheme management, financial management and market establishment.
They have been drawn from three irrigation schemes and are also expected to learn about crop management as well as cooperative establishment.
Chairperson of Upilewetu Irrigation Scheme, John Chigwenembe, described the visit to one of the sites, Bua Irrigation Scheme, as crucial since they will they tap knowledge from old and experienced farmers.
Chigwenembe said as a young scheme, they have a lot to learn if they are to fulfill their aspirations, and learning from experienced schemes can come in handy.
Elason Musaiwa, Irrigation Officer from Zomba District Council, said the trip was organised to encourage farmers to start considering irrigation farming as a business.
With support from the Malawi Watershed Improvement Services Project, Zomba is constructing three irrigation schemes of Bilira, Mango and Upilewetu.
