YOUTHS CHALLENGED TO ADVOCATE FOR CLIMATE CHANGE JUSTICE

Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi Ingrid Marie Mikelsen has hinted at incorporating youths in the country in combating challenges of climate change which she says are now a global crisis.

Mikelsen made the remarks in Lilongwe at a Climate Justice Conference organized by Point of Progress and other youth-led organisations who are striving for climate change justice.

“Youths have a vital role in driving change through innovation approaches to combat climate change, Norwegian Government will therefore continuously engage the youth on issues of combating effects of climate change,” Mikelsen said.

Director of Fisheries in the Ministry Of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Hastings Zidana said fighting climate change is fundamental to the development of a nation as failure to do so jeopardises development efforts hence the need to leave no one behind

Speaking on behalf of the youths, the Project Manager at Point of Progress, Sekanawo Mwatibu, said youths are willing to join the fight against climate change but the setback is a lack of finances.

The conference was organized under the theme: “Just Transition, Catalyzing Climate Change Action in Malawi for a Sustainable Future”.

Mwatibu said Malawi has strong ties with the Norwegian Government such that Malawi benefits through different projects across the country.

“Projects like the Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (NOREC) and Solidarity Exchange for the Environment and Development (SEED) have helped youths in the country to be aware of climate change issues,” said Mwatibu.
