As Malawi joins the world to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has expressed the need for Malawi to step up efforts in finding means that will help reduce drug abuse and crime which are on the increase.
UNODC National Programmes Officer, Maxwell Matewere, made the remarks during his public lecture at KUHES in Blantyre marking commemoration of the day which falls on 26 June every year.
Matewere noted that Malawi which has become a channel of drug trafficking a development that has led to a rise in drug abuse related cases.
The commemoration also had panel discussions and presentations from various health personnel, media professionals and former drug users.
The theme for the International Day Against Drug Abuse this year is: “Evidence is there: invest in prevention.”
