Trade Ministry backs export-led manufacturing as key to forex gains

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has supported  the upcoming National Product Magazine Business Awards, stressing the need to bolster manufacturing for export through stronger ties with agriculture and transport sectors.

Ministry of Trade Spokesperson, Patrick Botha, said Malawi must shift from raw exports to value-added products to secure sustainable foreign exchange earnings.

“Our strength lies in adding value to what we grow. Manufacturing must work hand in hand with agriculture and transport to tap into regional markets,”  said Botha.

Botha emphasised that Malawi’s economic turnaround depends on local industries embracing export-led growth.

“Exporting processed goods means more forex and jobs. We must build industries that look beyond our borders,” he added.

He further applauded NPM’s focus on key sectors, saying the initiative comes at a crucial time.

“This kind of recognition inspires businesses to innovate and scale up. It’s exactly the push our economy needs,” said Botha.

The awards are scheduled for 14 June 2025 in in the capital, Lilongwe.
