Malawi has joined the global community in commemorating the World Teachers Day under the theme ‘Valuing teachers’ voices: Towards a new social contract for education’.
The theme, according to the Ministry of Education, underscores the importance of supporting teachers as key partners in creating an inclusive and equitable education system.
The commemorating activities have started with a big walk, led by the Malawi Police Band, from Ministry of Education premises at Capital Hill in Lilongwe through to the Bingu International Convention Centre, where main activities will take place.
Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima, says her ministry recognises the importance of teachers’ contributions to building a knowledge-based economy and developing essential human capital for sustainable national development and growth.
“We, therefore, commemorate this important day as a reaffirmation of the Government’s commitment to elevating teachers’ voices in policy-making and education reform, and to improving their working conditions. World Teachers Day is an opportunity to honour teachers’ tremendous contributions to learners, communities and national development,” says Wirima.
